How to open and use PayPal account in Nigeria


PayPal is one of the most popular and known financial services providers medium of online payment, online money transfer from one country to another or from one individual to another or company to another.

PayPal services has almost replaced or serves as an alternative to the normal method of payment before now which is through checks and money order. 

PayPal which is an American based Company also operates online World wide as medium of payment for online vendors, auction sites and other commercial uses,  with an incrue fee to pay for thier services. 

When it was initially launched Nigeria and some other Countries where excluded from PayPal services but on June 16th 2014 in an interview with Rubert Keeley the executive in charge of EMEA region of PayPal of the payment units of eBay inc Said Nigeria and 10 other Countries will be added to it's PayPal services, unfortunately Nigeria was only limited to sending money and using the PayPal services for online transactions but "can't recieve funds" presently.

PayPal Company was found 1998 and leta became a owned subsidiary of eBay in that same year. 

PayPal has a large coverage area around the World in 2014 it moved to $228 billion in 30 currencies across more than 190 Nations. 

Making a networth revenue of about  $7.9 billion ( 44% of eBay's total profits ).

In 2015 eBay announced thier plans of making PayPal an independent Company and on July 18, 2015 that same year the plans was executed.

PayPal which is a financial service Company operates in 202 markets and has 197 billion active, register accounts.

  •  PayPal services is extended to more than 200 Countries,  in 202 markets and about 197 million active memebers, including Nigeria which was added to benefit from Palpay services on July 16th 2014.

  •  As of 2017, PayPal allowed it's customers to send, receive and hold funds in 25 currencies World wide. 

  •  It allows it's users to make online financial transactions, by allowing the transfer of funds electronically between individuals and businesses.

  •  Through PayPal it's users can send or receive payments for online autions on websites like eBay inc, purchase or sell goods and services, or donate money or recieve donations and one can convert to the currency option he or she wants to operate on in the account settings. 


How to open and use PayPal account in Nigeria

There are many numerous advantages of using  PapPal but l will  highlight 8 of them according to an online fellow.

How to sign up with Nigeria IP on PayPal account.

Follow this simple steps it will guide you through on how to sign up to PayPal.
1. Visit Paypal Nigerian homepage via PayPal home Page  and click on Signup at the top right corner of the page.

2. Click on “Open Account” under the “individual” section for a personal account.

3. Fill in all details and click on “Agree and Create Account“.


First Bank offers this option through their exclusive deal with PayPal. How does this work?

  •     Simply login in to your Internet banking account using your password and token
  •     Choose the “PayPal wallet” in the main tab and click “create PayPal wallet” on the drop down menu
  •     Select which cards you wish to link to your PayPal account and which card will be the default card. Try using one card for easy reconciliation
  •     Press the button on your online token and confirm accordingly
  •     Create a password in the pop up window that appears
  •     Click on “agree and create account”.
  •     Go to your registered email account with the bank which confirms that you have created a PayPal account.


    "Without verifying your paypal account, you would be placed at a $250 limit. Verifying your paypal account lets you spend as much as you will" 

After creating your account in 1, 2 and 3 

  •  A new page would come up with a form to log in your Card details. I used my GT Bank’s Naira MasterCard to get mine verified.

  •  You’ll be redirected to your account’s dashboard. But there are few things you still need to do. Firstly, you have to activate your paypal account by clicking the activation link sent to the mail you registered the account with. Secondly, you need to link and confirm your credit or debit card. 

Click on “Link and confirm credit or debit card” or “Get Verified” link in your account’s dashboard, insert your GTB Mastercard details here again, then click on “Continue“. You can make use of any Nigerian bank’s Visa or MasterCard.   

  • Paypal would deduct $1.95 from your card which they’ll refund in 24hrs. Now, your bank will alert you via SMS or email with a code which you’ll use in completing the whole verification process.
          Your bank’s SMS alert should read.

    The Naira equibvalent of USD1.95 has been authorized for the transaction done on PP*0123CODE 0123456789FF
( What you need do is copy the 4 digits before CODE (highlighted in red) from your mail or SMS alert. That’s what you need to confirm your card. )

  • You now have to login once more to your Nigerian Paypal account and click on “Confirm Card” link which should appear on the right sidebar of your dashboard. Then type in the four-digits you copied from your bank alert and click on “Confirm Card” as shown below.
