Meaning of IMEI, GPS, LED, LESER, LCD, HDML, MPEG, JPEG, PDF, CPU, CD-ROM, RAM.

Today am going to write on basic knowledge on the terminologies IMEI, LED, GPS, LCD.....

becasue is an almost everyday used words in Technology, but most times we dont realy understand what this abbreviations or ( Terminologies ) means,

so read on and get the basic knowledge of them all, hope it Educates you which is the core purpose of the writeup.

IMEI -International Mobile Equipment Identity.

IMEI is a special number which is used to identify GSM,  WCDMA,  and IDCN mobile phones, including some satillite phones.

The GSM numbers are usually stored in Database (Equipment Identity Register EIR) .

The IMEI number consists of four numbers which is divided into groups, with each group of numbers having its own unique meaning and function.

The first set of the unique numbers is the type approved code (TAC),

The first two digits represents the country code of the manufacturer, while the rest makes up the final assembly Code.

The second group of numbers identifies the manufacturer code like example below

01 and 02 is unique Code for AEG Manufacturers

07 and 40 is  unique Code for Motorola Manufacturers

10 and 20 is unique Code for Nokia Manufacturers

41 and 44 is unique Code for Siemens Manufacturers

51 is unique Code for Sony Ericsson Manufacturers

The third set of the IMEI group is the serial number and the last single digit is an additional number usually (0).

GPS- Global Positioning System

Is a Satellite-Based-Navigation System made up of many satellities up to 24 in numbers or more,  GPS service is strong enough and it works in any weather condition,

any where around the globe 24 hours a day,  without any subscription fees or setup charges.

The GPS was initially built by the US Department of Defence (USDOD)  and launched into the orbit for Military use,  but they were made available for Civilian use in the 1980's.

LED- Light Emitting Diode.

Is a Semi-Conductor device that emits or gives out visible light when an electric current passes through it from the terminals of the LED.

The brightness of the light is not that much, but in most LEDs it is monochromatic,  occuring at a single wavelenght.

LASER- Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

Is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification base on the stimulation emission of electromagnetic radiation,

  it is a light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.

LCD- Liquid Crystal Display

Is the technology used for display in notebooks and other smaller Computers,  like light emitting diode and gas-plasma technologies,

the LCD allows displays to be much thinner than Cathode ray tube (CRT)  technology, LCD consumes much lesser power than LED and Gas-Display because they  work in the principle of blocking light rather than emitting it.

HDMI- High Definition Multimedia Interface.

Is work or function is for writing text content and applications for handheld devices such as Mobile phones,  Pages, and Wireless PPAs.

It is similar to HTML but is built for devices with the following Characteristics

* Small display size

* Limited Imput capabilities

* Limited bandwidth

* Limited resource ( such as memory processing power and permanent storage).

MPEG- Moving Picture Expert Group.

Videos in this format are compressed using either MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 compression.

This makes MPEG files popular for online distribution, they can be streamed and donwloaded quicker than some other video formats.

JPEG- Joint Photograph Expert Group.

Is an ISO/IEC group of experts that develops and maintain standards for a smooth compression algorithms for computer image files.

PDF- Portable Document Format.

Is a file format that has captured all the elements of a printed document as an electronic image that you can view,  navigate, print or forward to somebody else.

Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Capture or similay products is used to creat PDF , to view and use PDF files you must have the free Acrobat Reader,

which can be easily downloaded,  once you'ev downloaded the Acrobat reader,  it will start automatically to display PDF files whenever you want to look at or read it.

CPU- Central Processing Unit.

Sometimes reffered to as Central Processor, but more commonly called Processor.

The CPU is the brain box of a Computer where most calculations take place.

In terms of computing power, the CPU is the most important element of a Computer System.

CD-ROM- Compact Disc Read Only Memory.

Is an adaptation of the CD that is designed to store Computer data in the form of text and graphics,  as well as Hifi Stereo Sounds.

RAM- Random Access Memory.

Is the place in a computing device where the operating System (OS)  application programs and data in current use are kept so they can be easily or quickly reached by the devices processor.

RAM is much faster to read from or write than other kinds if storage in a Computer, such as Hard Disk Drive (HDD),  Solid State Drive (SDD)  or Optical Drive.

Data remains in RAM as long as the Computer is ON and running,  but when the Computer is turned OFF RAM loses its data,

but when turned ON again the Operating System (OS)  and other files are loaded once again into the RAM usually from an HDD or SSD.
